The Nissan Terrano is Back! A Boxy, Body-on-Frame PHEV SUV to Rival the Bronco

The legendary Nissan Terrano has returned! This new plug-in hybrid SUV combines a boxy, retro design with electrified off-road capability. Aimed at dominating the trails and rivaling the Bronco, it’s set to hit the global market in 2027. Here’s everything you need to know.

Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept

Auto China 2026 in Beijing just gave us one of the biggest surprises of the year: the global debut of the Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept. Shedding the soft, family-hauler crossover look of recent years, the iconic nameplate is officially back. It has been reborn as a proper, body-on-frame plug-in hybrid SUV built to tackle serious trails.

The Return of the Terrano: Truck Bones and Off-Road DNA

The most exciting part of this reveal is Nissan going back to its purist roots. The new Terrano borrows its electrified underpinnings directly from the Frontier Pro PHEV mid-size truck.

Thanks to this rugged architecture, the new hybrid SUV is taking direct aim at heavy hitters like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota Land Cruiser. The goal is simple: deliver whisper-quiet, emission-free EV driving for the daily commute, while packing the hardcore 4×4 capability needed for weekend overlanding.

Old-School, Boxy Design

Visually, the Terrano PHEV brings back the muscular proportions we missed from the 90s. The matte black fender flares and retro three-spoke wheels, wrapped in chunky 33-inch mud-terrain tires, make a massive statement.

Up front, the SUV looks mean with rectangular LED headlights, heavy-duty skid plates, and built-in recovery hooks. Up top, a tubular roof rack with yellow auxiliary lights screams adventure. Out back, the exposed full-size spare tire and a utility ladder cement this concept’s status as a true, trail-ready rig.

PHEV Powertrain: Massive Torque and Efficiency

While Nissan hasn’t dropped the final specs for the SUV just yet, the Frontier-based powertrain gives us a huge hint. This plug-in hybrid setup is expected to pair a turbocharged 1.5-liter gas engine with a potent electric motor.

In the truck platform, this system cranks out around 416 horsepower (306 kW) and a massive 590 lb-ft of torque (800 Nm). That translates to insane low-end grunt for rock crawling and getting out of sticky situations. Plus, it offers the bonus of a solid all-electric range for everyday city driving without burning a drop of gas.

Launch Dates and 2027 Global Strategy

Nissan’s CEO, Ivan Espinosa, made it clear that this concept isn’t just vaporware. A production-ready version is slated to drop within a year, putting the Terrano PHEV on track to hit dealership lots in 2027.

Although developed alongside Chinese automaker Dongfeng, Nissan confirmed a global export strategy. Off-road enthusiasts are now just waiting to see when this rugged 4×4 will officially make its way to US shores to shake up the current off-road market.
