Volkswagen just threw a curveball at the entire EV industry. At Auto China 2026, the German automaker pulled the wraps off the ID. UNYX 09 — a full-size electric sedan built in collaboration with Chinese EV maker Xpeng. And honestly? It doesn’t look or feel like anything VW has made before.

This is not the Golf you grew up with. The ID. UNYX 09 stretches close to 200 inches from bumper to bumper, sits low to the ground, and carries the aggressive stance of a sports coupe. That long hood, the short rear deck — it’s a silhouette that has nothing to do with the ID.4 or the Jetta sitting in American driveways right now.

Design and Tech Highlights

The front end is where this car makes its first statement. Split headlights, a backlit VW logo, and a light signature that looks like something out of a sci-fi film. Blacked-out pillars, a contrast roof, and 21-inch wheels with Brembo brakes round out an exterior that feels sharply European in shape but thoroughly Chinese in ambition.

Inside, the tech level is genuinely impressive — even by 2026 standards. VW calls the cabin the Yunqi Smart Cabin, and it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip. That means fast responses, a large augmented reality HUD, and an onboard AI system that doesn’t just take commands — it makes decisions on its own and holds actual conversations with passengers. For American consumers used to CarPlay and basic voice assistants, this is a different league entirely.

Expected Performance and Market Position

VW hasn’t released official horsepower figures yet. But sources inside the industry put the estimated range between 370 and 435 miles on China’s CLTC cycle — which, adjusted for real-world driving, would still be competitive with the best long-range EVs on the American market, including the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Air. The battery pack comes from CATL, and the system runs on a high-voltage architecture designed for faster charging. Level 2+ autonomous driving assistance is confirmed, which means hands-on-wheel highway cruising and more relaxed long-distance drives.

Why VW Built This — and Why It Matters

Here’s the part that surprised a lot of people in the industry: this car went from concept to production-ready in just 24 months. That timeline is almost unheard of for a legacy automaker working on a flagship sedan. The Xpeng partnership is the reason it happened that fast, and it signals a clear shift in how VW is approaching the Chinese market.

The strategy is called “In China, for China” — and VW is taking it literally. Chinese buyers, especially younger ones under 35, have been walking away from European brands and into showrooms for BYD, Li Auto, and Nio. The UNYX 09 is VW’s answer to that trend: a car designed from the ground up to compete on Chinese terms, with Chinese tech, built at Chinese speed.

First deliveries are expected in the second half of 2026, with full-scale sales rolling out through 2027. For now, the car will not come to the United States or Europe. And yes, that’s frustrating — because it looks incredible. But VW has over 20 new electric models lined up for the Chinese market this year alone, and the UNYX 09 is the one leading the charge.
