The 2027 Prius XLE Is Making the Case for a More Upscale Hybrid

Toyota has officially unveiled the 2027 Prius lineup for the U.S. market, and the XLE trim is shaping up to be the sweet spot. It sits right in the middle of the range, above the entry-level LE and below the Nightshade and Limited trims, but it packs in enough tech and comfort features to justify the step up.

Production takes place at Toyota’s Tsutsumi plant in Japan, and dealers should start seeing the 2027 Prius arrive on lots by summer 2026. This marks the fifth generation of the Prius nameplate, now running on Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, badged THS 5.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the Prius XLE uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine paired with the hybrid system. In front-wheel-drive form, combined output lands at 194 horsepower. Step up to AWD, and that number climbs to 196 horsepower thanks to a rear electric motor that kicks in when extra grip is needed.

That all-wheel-drive setup skips the traditional mechanical driveshaft entirely. Instead, Toyota uses an independent permanent-magnet electric motor mounted on the rear axle, activated by wheel-speed and G-force sensors whenever the system detects a loss of traction.

The extra motor pays off at the stoplight, too. The FWD Prius XLE hits 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, while the AWD version shaves that down to 7.0 seconds. Power routes through a CVT tuned for the hybrid system, and drivers can toggle between Normal, Eco, and Sport modes. There’s also an EV mode for short, low-speed trips, though Toyota hasn’t released an official all-electric range for it.

Fuel Economy

Toyota has only published EPA fuel economy figures for the base LE trim so far. The FWD LE is rated at 55 mpg combined, while the AWD version comes in at 53 mpg combined. Those numbers give a solid baseline for the lineup, but Toyota hasn’t confirmed separate EPA ratings for the XLE trim specifically.

Interior and Tech

The XLE is where the Prius starts to feel genuinely upscale. The front seats get SofTex upholstery with eight-way power adjustment, plus heating. The steering wheel is heated too and wrapped in the same SofTex material. Dual-zone automatic climate control now comes standard across the entire 2027 lineup, a welcome addition for anyone tired of fiddling with vents.

An 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen handles infotainment duties, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six USB-C ports, and over-the-air software updates. Toyota also throws in Qi wireless charging starting at the XLE trim, a feature that’s noticeably absent on the base LE. Round out the package with 19-inch alloy wheels and rain-sensing wipers, and the XLE starts to feel like a genuinely well-equipped daily driver.

Safety Features

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard across the board, bundling pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, and road sign recognition. The XLE adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Alert, which warns rear-seat passengers before they open a door into oncoming traffic or a cyclist.

The 2026 Prius earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, though that result hasn’t been confirmed to carry over to the 2027 model year yet.

Pricing

Stateside, the 2027 Prius XLE starts at $32,200 for the FWD model and $33,600 for AWD, both before Toyota’s mandatory $1,295 delivery fee. That puts the XLE roughly $3,445 above the equivalent LE trim.

Buyers chasing more luxury will need to look at the Limited trim, which adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker JBL sound system, ventilated seats, and a power liftgate. The XLE plays it more practical, striking a balance between price and equipment without cutting corners on the essentials.

Toyota hasn’t said whether the 2027 Prius XLE will make it to other markets outside the U.S., and details like battery capacity, electric-only range, and cargo volume remain unannounced for now.
