The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 blends turbocharged muscle with an electric boost — and the Edition R trim takes that formula even further.

Mercedes-AMG built the CLE 53 Coupe to do something tricky: replace two beloved models at once. It takes the nimble character of the old C-Class Coupe and pairs it with the road presence of the E-Class Coupe.
The result is a two-door with a wider stance than either predecessor, plus the kind of muscular bodywork AMG’s performance division is known for.
A Turbo Six With an Electric Assist
Under the hood sits a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, badged M 256M internally. It’s paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds real punch, not just marginal efficiency gains.
That system uses an integrated starter-generator to kick in up to 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque during hard acceleration. Combined output lands at 449 horsepower, arriving between 5,800 and 6,100 rpm.
Torque holds steady at 560 Nm, with brief overboost spikes reaching 600 Nm when you really lean on the throttle.
Nine Gears, Variable AWD, and a Drift Mode
Power routes through a nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic. The 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system can shift torque fully to the rear axle in certain drive modes, unlocking genuine drift capability — not something you see often in this segment.
With Race Start engaged, the CLE 53 covers zero to 62 mph in roughly 4.0 to 4.2 seconds. Top speed is capped at 155 mph, though the optional AMG Driver’s Package raises that ceiling to 168 mph.
Rear-Steer Handling That Actually Matters
The CLE 53 uses rear-axle steering, with the back wheels turning up to 2.5 degrees. At low speeds they steer opposite the fronts for a tighter turning radius; at highway speeds they turn the same direction for added stability.
AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension covers Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes. Step up to the AMG Dynamic Plus package and you also get a dedicated Race program, active engine mounts, and an electronically controlled rear differential.
What the Edition R Trim Adds
The Edition R leans harder into track-day intent. It swaps in a reworked front bumper with sportier air deflectors, a larger rear spoiler lip, and a gloss-black rear diffuser.
Twenty-inch alloy wheels get a matte black finish, paired with eye-catching red brake calipers. Inside, metal pedals and carbon-fiber trim round out the sportier feel.
One standout feature comes standard on this trim: AMG Track Pace, a built-in telemetry system that logs lap times and performance data for track sessions.
Size and Everyday Usability
The coupe stretches 191.1 inches long and 80.4 inches wide including mirrors, with a height of 56.5 inches. Trunk space comes in at 14.5 cubic feet, respectable for a performance-focused two-door.
Fuel capacity sits at 17.2 gallons, and curb weight lands around 4,409 pounds in European trim — figures that reflect the CLE 53’s blend of power and everyday livability.
Tech Inside the Cabin
The MBUX system features a curved, portrait-oriented center display alongside AMG-specific readouts — oil temperature, g-force, lap timing, and torque delivery graphics all show up in real time.
Digital Light headlights use high-definition projectors that automatically adjust their beam pattern to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. Available AMG Performance seats bring multi-contour support, ventilation, heating, and massage functions.
The cabin sound can be enhanced through AMG’s Real Performance Sound system, which channels engine notes into the cabin, while a Burmester surround system handles everyday audio.
The Bottom Line
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 pairs serious hybrid power with genuinely adjustable handling, and the Edition R pushes that further with track-ready hardware and telemetry tools. It’s a coupe built for drivers who want more than just badge appeal — and the numbers back that up.
