The Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept merges nostalgia and high-tech innovation, turning a classic into the ultimate beach cruiser. Packing an electric motor and all-wheel drive, this concept previews bold solutions for the future of off-road EVs.

France hosted the initial showcase of this concept car during the 2026 Roland-Garros tournament. The automaker wants to capture the laid-back vibe of the 1969 Plein Air editions and the original 1981 JP4. The design heavily leans into minimalism, zeroing in completely on outdoor recreation.
This historical revival rides on the modern E-Tech Electric platform. The brand chose a slightly pearlescent emerald-green bodywork for the exterior. This specific paint job is a direct nod to the Emerald Green and Lettuce Green shades offered on the classic ‘4L’ throughout the 1970s and 80s.
That green exterior creates a striking contrast with the vibrant orange cabin. These color choices are entirely intentional. They amplify the dynamic energy that Renault wants to project to buyers chasing coastal adventures.
The biggest dynamic advantage of this model is its all-wheel drive setup. This mechanical system allows the driver to tackle loose sand and uneven trails without breaking a sweat. Pushing power to both axles easily offsets the extra weight of the electric battery pack during light off-roading.
The body ditched conventional doors entirely, featuring open cutouts for quick and easy access. Because removing solid side pillars hurts torsional rigidity, the engineering team designed a cross-shaped hollow roof. This top reinforcement prevents the chassis from flexing too much when crawling over rough terrain.
Around back, the traditional enclosed trunk is gone, replaced by a pickup-style bed. The tailgate drops down, making it much easier to slide in heavy gear. This setup is perfect for throwing surfboards up top or stashing skateboards in the lower cargo hold.
The seats feature a distinct “Egyptian mummy” shape with integrated headrests. They are wrapped in a mix of crepe fabric and mesh sections. Designers picked these materials because they resist moisture and are super easy to clean after a long day at the beach.
The final result is a cabin that blends sporty aesthetics with heavy-duty practicality for daily driving. The overall goal is to set fresh design trends for the brand’s upcoming electric vehicles.
What do you think about the cross-shaped roof design to keep the chassis stiff?
