The 2027 Land Rover Defender Dakar will be a limited street-legal SUV with a 635-hp twin-turbo V8, 35-inch tires, race-inspired suspension and technology built for dunes and jumps.

The 2027 Land Rover Defender Dakar will be a limited-production SUV with a 635-hp V8, oversized all-terrain tires and hardware developed from Land Rover’s Dakar racing program.
The model is based on the Defender Dakar D7X-R, which competed in the Stock class of the 2026 Dakar Rally. Its design connects the street vehicle to a race truck built around the Defender’s architecture.
The competition Defender finished first, second and fourth in its class during its debut. That result helped set the stage for a road-going model aimed at collectors and serious off-road enthusiasts.
The Defender Dakar will use a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 635 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque.
That output is well above the roughly 400 hp available in the race vehicle under the rules of its competition class. The street model will also retain all-wheel drive and the Defender’s rugged D7x platform.
Land Rover has upgraded the cooling system to handle the additional power and the punishment expected during high-speed off-road driving.
Fuel economy has not been announced, and it is not likely to be a central concern for buyers considering a limited-run SUV with this level of power and specialized equipment.
The Defender Dakar will ride on 35-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch forged wheels.
Its suspension will use coil springs, revised geometry and Bilstein Advanced Dampers. The track width and ground clearance will also be greater than those of a standard Defender.
Those changes are aimed at improving stability and control on loose surfaces, particularly sand, gravel and uneven desert terrain.
Flight Mode is an electronic setting designed to help control the vehicle when it becomes airborne during a jump.
The system prepares the SUV’s electronic controls for landing, helping reduce the harshness of the impact when the tires return to the ground. The Defender Dakar will also include Dunes and Gravel modes for specific off-road conditions.
These features give the model a direct technical connection to the demands of rally-raid competition, rather than simply adding cosmetic styling inspired by racing.
The Defender Dakar will feature a more aggressive body than a standard production Defender, with carbon-fiber hood sections, raised air intakes and widened fenders.
Visible rivets, extra roof lighting and lower metal protection reinforce the competition-inspired design. The combination is functional as well as visual, with components intended to support demanding off-road use.
Inside, the SUV will have a 2+2 layout, front bucket seats and an available four-point harness setup. The rear area will include dedicated helmet storage.
The cargo compartment will also carry a spare-tire mount and an integrated air compressor. Exterior colors will include Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof, along with Narvik Black and Alaska White.
Reservations are expected to open in early 2027, with full specifications scheduled to be revealed around the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
Land Rover has not announced the MSRP, production volume or final availability for the United States. Those details will determine how exclusive the model becomes and how far its price moves beyond the regular Defender lineup.
The Defender Dakar makes sense as a collectible performance SUV for buyers who want genuine rally-inspired engineering rather than a simple appearance package.
Its 635-hp V8, 35-inch tires, Bilstein suspension and Flight Mode give it a rare level of off-road focus. For most SUV shoppers, its size, specialized layout and unknown MSRP will make it impractical.
For enthusiasts, however, the appeal is clear: this is a street-legal Defender designed to preserve the drama of desert racing in a limited, highly specialized package.
